Almost always because you're in the rich text editor rather than the markdown one. Look for the switch in the corner of the comment box and change it to markdown mode, then paste again.
Do tables work everywhere on Reddit?
They work in posts and comments on the web and in the official app. Some older third party apps display them as plain text.
What if my text has a pipe character in it?
It's escaped for you automatically, so the table won't break.
Can I use this for GitHub or Discord?
GitHub uses the same table syntax, so yes. Discord doesn't support tables at all.
